Surf City K8 School

The Surf City K8 Project for Pender County Schools consists of the construction of both the new Surf City Elementary and Surf City Middle Schools located in Hampstead, NC. The schools share a building, with the middle and elementary school wings connected by a a 730-foot-long corridor. The facility features a large multi-purpose room with a stage and cafeteria, which can be divided into three rooms with mobile walls. The middle school wing has three science labs, and an open design on the second floor to allow for maintenance staff to access the utilities in every classroom from above. Preparation for construction was extremely challenging due to the marshy site conditions. Barnhill had to fill-in the site with 7,000 truckloads of dirt after water was drained to large retention ponds behind the schools.

The total project is approximately 184,000 SF.  The schools can accommodate 1,568 students.
