Barnhill Contracting Company is acting as a subcontractor on the Sunset Bridge project. The project includes replacing the wooden pontoon bridge that has connected Sunset Beach to the mainland for more than 47 years. Barnhill's scope of work includes importing borrow to build the bridge approaches on each side of the bridge, building a temporary detour out into the marsh to route traffic around the approach on the island side, installing aggregate base course, dewatering a golf course pond to build a new dam and plunge pool, relocating an asphalt golf cart path, boring 42 inches under NC179 into Slough Canal and storm drainage.

English Construction is the prime contractor for the project. Construction is expected to complete in 2010.
