Raleigh convention center
raleigh, north carolina
The Raleigh Convention Center has been honored with numerous awards - The Pinnacle Award for Best Building Project by the Carolinas Associated General Contractors, Best Public Building by Southeast Construction magazine and the Top Entertainment/Hospitality Development by the Triangle Business Journal 2008 Space Awards.
The Raleigh Convention Center is arranged on three levels with the lowest being the 150,000-square foot Exhibit Hall. Above this, at street level are 30,000-square feet of Meeting Rooms. The third and uppermost level is home to the 32,000-square foot Grand Ballroom. The building will occupy a full city block at street level and rise to a total height of approximately 100 feet. Below street level, the size of the Exhibit Hall, loading docks, and services will expand below two adjacent city streets. The main entrance is organized around a long, grand lobby overlooking a plaza. In the plaza are a grand stairway, fountains, special meeting rooms and indoor/outdoor retail. From the lobby, along the adjacent streets are two concourses that extend to connect all levels of the building. The materials of the building are stone and brick with gracious amounts of glass curtainwall to allow views into and from the building to the city beyond.
The building and landscape design are very pedestrian friendly with gracious sidewalks, street lighting, canopies and multiple entrances on all sides. All services for the building are also located below street level, further enhancing the pedestrian friendly nature of the design.
This project was constructed as a joint venture between Skanska USA Building Inc. and Barnhill Contracting Company.
